Gym to Crag

Confident on the wall but never climbed outside? This course covers everything you need to make the transition — reading real rock, setting up at the crag, and getting comfortable in an environment that doesn't come with colour-coded holds or flat ground for belaying. In this course we take everything you already know and show you how it applies (and where it doesn't) at the crag.

What we cover

  • Setting up at the crag — finding routes, reading topos, crag safety
  • Outdoor belaying — stance, position, communication
  • Fixed gear and protection — bolts, chains and what variations to expect
  • Reading outdoor rock — texture, features, movement on limestone
  • Rope and gear management
  • Crag etiquette and the unwritten rules of outdoor climbing

Lead climbing

Across 3 sessions, you'll learn to safely lead climb a route. We will cover a wide range of new skills including clipping technique and best practice, communication, rope management, and mental fortitude. We will get you to the point where you're safe and comfortable on a lead route, and taking falls above and below a bolt.

you'll also learn how to safely lead belay from a standing position and practice catching lead falls. We will also look at different devices and practices and cover critical skills such as how to check your rope for wear and tear. After this course you will be well on the way to being an independent climber. Apart from anchors and cleaning, and working on the pro skill of giving soft catches when belaying, you're almost there!

What we cover

  • Clipping technique — quickdraws, bolt-to-bolt clipping sequence, avoiding backclips and z-clips
  • Lead belaying — giving slack, reading the climber, communication
  • Catching lead falls — the first step in becoming a good lead belayer
  • Falling practice — learning to fall safely and lose the fear
  • Route management — rope drag, clipping position, reading the line above you

lead belay master

You can lead belay. But there's a difference between catching a fall and catching it well. This session is for climbers who already learnt how to lead belay but want to go beyond the basics and learn how to give a soft catch - and why it's so important. We'll cover the physics of a fall and how small adjustments in your technique can make a significant difference to your climbing partner. The kind of belaying that makes leaders feel confident pushing their grade.

What we cover

  • Why soft catches matter — the physics of a lead fall explained
  • Reading the fall before it happens — anticipation and positioning
  • How and when to give slack, jump, and move into the fall
  • Common belaying habits that make falls harder than they need to be
  • Catching falls in different scenarios — low on the route, near a ledge, overhanging terrain
  • Building trust with your climbing partner.

anchor cleaning

Cleaning an anchor is the skill that makes you a fully independent sport climber. Without it, you always need someone else to retrieve your gear. And this is something where mistakes simply can not be made.

In this course we talk you through the process and the gear you need, then practice on an anchor while on the ground. Once you're doing this with no mistakes, we'll be right there next to you while you clean your first anchor at the top of a route.

What we cover

  • Anchor types — rings, chains and what's common in Malta
  • Staying safe while you set up and clean
  • Threading the rope — the full sequence, done correctly every time
  • Retrieving your quickdraws and collecting gear on the way down
  • Communication with your belayer
  • Troubleshooting — what to do when the anchor is unfamiliar or awkward

abseiling

Want the thrill without all the hard work? Abseiling may be for you. Not only is it great fun, but several of our stunning sea cliff climbs are accessible only by abseil, so it's a great skill to have if you want to make the most of Malta's wildest spots. In this course we'll teach you technique, equipment handling and how to set your own anchors; everything you need to know to be confident and safe when using your own gear.

What we cover

  • Abseil systems and how they work — devices, backups and redundancy
  • Setting up and checking an abseil safely
  • Managing the edge — technique, body position and overcoming hesitation
  • Common mistakes and how to avoid them
